Welcome Back, Wildcats!
President's Letter
Well, we are off to a great start!  The beginning part of the year is busy for PTA.  As you may have noticed, we have two major fundraisers this fall.  First, is the Cookie Dough Fundraiser, which will run from September 10th - September 27th.  We will have samples of the cookies at our Whiteley School Family Picnic.  The second fundraiser is our Yankee Candle sale.  This sale will run from October 8th through October 22nd.  In addition to these fundraisers, we also earn a small percentage of the total sale from Market Day.  We appreciate your support to any or all of these fundraisers!
Coming up in October we have Dads 'n' Donuts on October 1st and Moms 'n' Munchies on October 15th.  Both will be held from 8:00 - 8:35 AM.  Please stop in the Multi-purpose room and enjoy a donut with your child(ren)!
Our next PTA meeting will be an Open House on September 16th starting at 6:30 PM in the teacher's lounge.  Please consider joining us that evening to learn more about our PTA.  Please note that by attending the meeting, it does NOT mean that you are obligated to "help!"
Don't forget to check your calendar for a list of the upcoming events.  You can also access the calendar online at www.fcwpta.org
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Jennifer Nemec, PTA President
From Our Principal
Dear Parents,
Whiteley School has had a wonderful start to the new school year!  All the students seem to be settling into the routine.
Thank you for attending Parent Orientation on September 1, 2010.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Whiteley School Family Picnic on Thursday, September 9th from 4:30 - 6:30 PM, which is sponsored by our PTA.  I hope that everyone joins the PTA during the membership drive.  We are very fortunate to have a great PTA that provides numerous events for our families.
I expect every Whiteley Wildcat to follow our three very important rules:  Be respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe.  Mrs. Liz Wong, our new Assistant Principal, and I met with each grade level the first day of school to review the importance of making good choices every day.  We recognize our students who regularly make positive choices by their participation in our whole school celebrations throughout the year.  Students who have three minor infractions or one major infraction are not allowed to attend the celebration for that time frame.  Those students are engaged in problem solving activities and can regain the privilege to attend the next celebration.
Our staff is part of the No Excuses University Network.  Each classroom has adopted a university or college.  At our pep rally, I spoke to our students about how important their elementary school years are in their preparation for college.  In using Mrs. Zeivel's favorite phrase, they are "packing for college."  They are packing essential skills each year.  Some examples are:  listening, following directions, completing homework on time, and giving 100% effort to their learning.  Whether part of a classroom team or the whole school, we try to do the best possible and help others along the way.

The staff and I are planning a No Excuses University Parent Education Night on Thursday, October 7th from 6:30 - 7:30 PM.  There will be more information to follow.

Whiteley School Family Picnic
Our Whiteley School Family Picnic is being held Thursday, September 9th from 4:30 - 6:30 PM.   Please remember to bring your own drinks, along with blankets and/or chairs. If you did not pre-order food, pack a picnic, and join us!  Weather permitting, we will be outside on the blacktop in back of school.  If it is raining, we will be in the multi-purpose room.  You will have an opportunity to sample the cookies that are being sold for the fundraiser this year, and our new line of Whiteley spirit wear will be on display.
Market Day Has a New Pick-Up Time!
Welcome back to school!  We were so excited to see so many of you at Parent Orientation.  Thank you for stopping by to sample our yummy Market Day meatballs and chocolate chocolate chip cakes;  so easy and ready to prepare at any time.

The purpose of Market Day is not only to make your meal and shopping experience a litter easier, it is also to support our PTA.  In 2009-2010 we were able to generate $2,000.00 for our childrens programs.  Thank you!  To encourage more orders, we have changed the pick-up time to 3:30 - 4:30 PM on Wednesday afternoon in the multi-purpose room.  If that time does not work for you, just contact Denise Pitcher at successb440@aol.com to work through the details.  Why not stock up for Monday night football?  You can just run to your freezer and pull out some yummy cheese pizza and a pack of (kid-sized)Gatorade.  The whole family will be happy!

We are looking for helpers when it comes to putting labels on the order forms & also to help out on the day of delivery.  We need extra hands for sorting.  This would be a great way for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or church groups to earn extra service hours.  Please contact us!

Again, welcome back to school and thank you for your support,

New Blacktop Games For Intermediate Grades Make Recess More Fun
blacktop playgroundPrior to her move to Kimball Hill, our former Assistant Principal, Debbie Sorensen, spear headed a project to turn our blacktop into an exciting gallery of games for our intermediate students in grades 3 - 6. Mrs. Sorensen, along
with many Whiteley staff members and former
6th grade students designed various games
to be played during lunch recess.  The District 15 Maintenance Crew then turned the creative
designs into colorful games painted on the blacktop just behind the school building.

target baggoThe games include:  4-Square, Baggo, Baggo bullseye,
a huge color/shape wheel, and extra large checkers &
chess boards with jumbo playing pieces.   Intermediate students have been enjoying the new games and
friendly competition during lunch recess.  Thanks
to everyone who played a role in this great team effort!

Here's to a fun recess!
Creature Feature
creaturefeature Whiteley Staff and Students have two new, little critters in the Creature Feature case just outside the Resource Center.  Be sure to stop by to meet Hammy & Teddy!  These adorable little hamsters are either running on their wheel or sleeping under their hiding places.  See if you can catch a glimpse of the new Whiteley Creature Feature.
School Safety Zone
School Zone
Are you abiding by the new laws concerning cell phones?  Please remember, the state of Illinois restricts the usage of hand held phones in construction zones and school speed zones.  Our law also bans all texting while driving.  Please do your part in making Whiteley School Zone a safe place for our children, especially during drop-off and pick-up times when our parking lots and nearby streets are most congested.

PUT DOWN YOUR CELL PHONE and make Whiteley School a No Phone Zone!

In addition, please remember to properly fasten all passengers in your car.
Reminder From Our School Lunch Program
School lunch Please remember to include your child's first and last names on envelopes being turned in with lunch money inside.  This will ensure your child can receive his/her lunch each day.

If you have any questions regarding our lunch program, please call Mrs. Grabowski at 847-963-7208

Box Tops For Education
Box Top$ for Education Wow!  What a fun way to help our school.  We have ordered mini collection boxes.  If you work in an office or have family members or friends who live in a senior community, e-mail or call us to pick up a collection box for them to gather box tops.  There are many folks who feel guilty throwing box tops away but don't know where to bring them.  Maybe they could help the Whiteley Community.  Our goal is to raise extra money to update the primary grades playground area.  Clipping the box tops is easy.  Watch for the flyer in your child's backpack to save your box tops, and learn about the Box Tops Challenge for all students at Franck C. Whiteley.
Feel free to call or e-mail with any questions, and be sure to visit the website where you can register for free coupons www.boxtopsforeducation.com
Thank you for your support!
