President's Letter
| Goodbye September and Hello October and Fall!
Here's a recap of our September.- Thank you to Amy Langston for organizing the Back to School Picnic. It was fun to have Culver's grilling for us!
- We received very good feedback about our Spiritwear selections. A huge thanks goes out to Mary Beth Warner for bringing us new items this year.
I know everyone is anxious to get their new items!
- We are off and running with Market Day. If you are not aware the pick-up time was moved to 3:30-4:30. Nancy Edwards and Denise Pitcher work hard to make sure everyone's orders are packed and ready for them before the pick-up time. If you haven't purchased Market Day before, now is the time. It's easy to place an order and pick-up is a breeze! Market Day pick-up is the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
- All students were photographed on Picture Day thanks to Debbie Klonder and Paula Riccardo. Pictures will be sent home with your student around October 15th.
- Did you try a cookie at the Back to School picnic? Well that cookie that you ate is from the Cookie Dough fundraiser that ended in September. Kris Constantino and Ellen Josten were busy baking cookies that day for all to try.
- Looks like Nancy Edwards ordered enough donuts for all of our Dads! It was great to see so many Dads at "Dads and Donuts". Moms you're next!
Coming up in October we have our second fundraiser which is Yankee Candles. This fundraiser starts on October 8th. How about supporting your PTA and purchase a candle or two? Yankee Candles also make great holiday gifts. Please help us achieve our goal of fundraising $5,000 for the year. "Moms and Munchies" will be held on Friday, October 15th, Retake Picture Day is Monday, October 25th, Cookie Dough pick-up is on Wednesday, October 27th, and of course our Halloween parties are on Friday, October 29th.

| From Our Principal |
Halloween is a special time for children as well as an exciting day at school. We would like to provide you with some information regarding our Halloween activities so that all children will have an enjoyable day. Our activities will be held on Friday, October 29th, beginning with an all school parade at 1:35 p.m. The parade will be held outdoors with children walking outside through the kindergarten exit. They will then proceed along the front walkway and reenter the building at the north parking lot entrance. Parents are welcome to attend. Parents may watch the parade from anywhere along the outdoor parade route. In the event of rain, the parade will be held throughout our main hallway. After the parade, children will go back to their classrooms for their Halloween parties. Morning kindergarten classes will organize a parade for their students. Kindergarten teachers will send home information regarding their Halloween activities. If you are bringing treats to school for the parties, please drop them off in the school foyer. Mark the treats with your child's name, teacher's name and room number and we will make sure they are delivered to the classroom prior to the start of the party. We ask that only room parents who are running the class parties be in the classrooms during the Halloween party. We appreciate your help with this as our teachers plan a full morning of instruction and we want to minimize the amount of interruptions during this time. Kindergarten students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school. All other children may bring their costumes to school in a bag or go home for lunch to change. If your child is going home for lunch, please fill out the note that will be sent home from school indicating this. Students who bring their costumes to school will be allowed to change into their costume during lunch. Students should not bring costume props on the bus.
The lunch-time on October 29th will be from 12:20-1:20.
Students should not wear costumes that represent alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or violence. Items such as fake blood, knives, guns or any other type of weapon may NOT be worn or brought to school. Students should also not wear costumes that expose their midriffs, or that are low cut in the front. Wearing a T-shirt or leotard underneath these types of costumes is acceptable. Students in grades 1 - 6 may color their hair at home during the lunch hour, but may not come to school in the morning with make-up or colored hair. Also, no hair colorings, sprays or supplies are to be brought to school. At 3:20 p.m. all "walkers" will be reminded to go straight home.

AWARD WINNING GIVERS!!!
| Last year our Whiteley Wildcats won the 'TOPS' Award from the Palatine Township for their outstanding generosity. We will keep that spirit alive for the Children Helping Children toy and clothing drive that will take place the week of December 6th thru the 10th. This drive helps spread the joy of the holidays to our neighbors that may not have much to give to their own families due to these hard economic times. A flyer with more information will be coming out around Thanksgiving time.
Have a wonderful Fall season!

Whiteley Prepares For Author Lincoln Peirce to Visit
|
A Whiteley 6th Grader shows his own artistic talents by creating a welcome sign for Lincoln Peirce. Anderson's Bookshop has done it again! We are thrilled to have a visit from Lincoln Peirce, the author of the Big Nate series. Lincoln will be at our school on Monday, October 18th. He will talk to 6th grade students about his new book, Big Nate Strikes Again, his ideas, and his writing. At the end of his visit, he will be interviewed by a Whiteley student, which will be aired on our school channel 76. If you would like to purchase one of his books, please see Mrs. Saez for an order form. A HUGE thank you goes out to Anderson's Bookshop for treating us to another quality writer!

Look What's Happening in Mrs. Croak's Room
| There is a neat little activity going on in the multi-age first/second grade classroom. At the start of the school year, Mrs. Croak and her students set goals to improve their keyboarding skills while using the home row key placement. Mrs. Croak recorded each child's words per minute (WPM) before the practice began.
Parents of Mrs. Croak's students were then asked to donate old keyboards. Mrs. Croak and her students then cut off all cords and color coded the keys into "focus sets" for each finger. Did you know that the right pinkie finger is responsible for 16 keys??
The classroom currently has 9 painted keyboards arranged in "Keyboard Court" at the back of the room. Students use these keyboards to practice sight words, spelling words and a variety of themed vocabulary words. They spend 30 minutes of their computer time each week improving their keyboarding skills in a program called Type to Learn. Students are really looking forward to their next WPM timing to see how they have grown!
If you have any dusty old keyboards no longer in use, please donate to Mrs. Croak's room to be used in this creative learning activity!
Kudos to you, Room 109, for your outstanding efforts & wonderful reusing of keyboards!

Students in grades 3 - 6 have completed their mile run, and everyone did a great job!
Coming up on Tuesday, October 5th, Sixth Graders will be running the District Cross Country Mile. Good luck to all of our runners!
We are also looking forward to our Juvenile Diabetes Walk coming up on Friday, October 15th. This event will take place from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. We would love to have as many participants as possible, since diabetes is a disease that affects some of our own Whiteley students. What a great way to show our support!
Kindergym will begin the week of October 4th. Thank you to all the volunteers who will be helping and playing with us on those days!

Celebrate your child's birthday by donating a book to the Frank C. Whiteley Resource Center. Your child's name will be on a permanent label inside the book, and they will be the first to check it out.

If interested, send your donation ($10 - $15 for an entire book) and the form to school in an envelope marked Birthday Book Club. We will then invite your child to the RC to select a book from "the vault". | Halloween Safety Tips for Trick or Treating Children should always go out trick or treating accompanied by a responsible adult. If you have a group of kids going, the parents should choose two or three of them to go along and keep an eye on things.
- Make sure and stick to the curfew times and stick to subdivisions and areas with a lot of homes so your kids can get in as much trick or treating as possible in a few hours time.
- Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home. Make sure that your child is old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves. Make sure that they have a cell phone.
- Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields if they are out alone. Make sure they know to stay in populated areas and not to go off the beaten track. Let them know to stay in well lighted areas with lots of people around. Explain to them why it can be dangerous for kids not to do this. If they are going out alone, they are old enough to know what can happen to them in a bad situation and how to stop it from happening.
- Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you. This way you can check for any problem candy and get the pick of the best stuff!
- Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car. Explain why this is not a god idea and what to do if someone approaches them and tries to talk to them.
- Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.
- Let them know that they should stay together as a group if going out to Trick or Treat without an adult.
