President's Letter

Dear Whiteley Families,

It was terrific to see so many of you at the Open House a couple of weeks ago.
We have many exciting events planned for October, so please mark your calendars now! Thanks to all the Moms who came to school early on October 7 for Moms and Munchies!   On October 21st we will be having Dads and Doughnuts. This is a great opportunity for you to meet other parents and your children's new friends.

A mission of our PTA is to provide the best in educational support to our
students and teachers. We have managed to continue this mission successfully
despite the many budget cuts our school system is facing. All of these wonderful
events do not occur without your financial support.  Thank you for participating in
our school fundraisers.

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful fall we are having!

Dear Parents,

October is a busy month at Whiteley!  I hope you all enjoyed a nice, long weekend with your children.  CogAt Testing for grades 2, 4, & 6 will be held from October 17 - 28.  Our Third and Fourth Grade Students will have their musicals on

October 27.  The Grade 3 performance will be held at 6:30 PM, and Grade 4 performance will begin at 7:30 PM.

Mary Szuch
Mary Szuch  Whiteley Principal

Halloween is a special time for children as well as an exciting day at school.  We would like to provide you with some information regarding our Halloween activities so that all children will have an enjoyable day.  Please refer to the section below to familiarize yourself with all the details of this busy day.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Mary Szuch, Principal

Halloween Parade and Classroom Parties
halloweenparade

Our activities will be held on Monday, October 31st, beginning with an all school parade at 1:35 p.m.  The parade will be held outdoors with children walking outside through the kindergarten exit.  They will then proceed along the front walkway and reenter the building at the north parking lot entrance.  Parents are welcome to attend.  Parents may watch the parade from anywhere along the outdoor parade route.  In the event of rain, the parade will be held throughout our main hallway.  After the parade, children will go back to their classrooms for their Halloween parties.  Morning kindergarten classes will organize a parade for their students.  Kindergarten teachers will send home information regarding their Halloween activities.

If you are bringing treats to school for the parties, please drop them off in the school foyer.  Mark the treats with your child's name, teacher's name and room number and we will make sure they are delivered to the classroom prior to the start of the party.  We ask that only room parents who are running the class parties be in the classrooms during the Halloween party.  We appreciate your help with this as our teachers plan a full morning of instruction, and we want to minimize the amount of interruptions during this time.

Kindergarten students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school.  All other children may bring their costumes to school in a bag or go home for lunch to change.  If your child is going home for lunch, please fill out the note that will be sent home from school indicating this.  Students who bring their costumes to school will be allowed to change into their costumes during lunch.  Students should not bring costume props on the bus.  The lunch-time on October 31st will be from 12:20-1:20.

Students should not wear costumes that represent alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or violence.  Items such as fake blood, knives, guns or any other type of weapon may NOT be worn or brought to school.  Students should also not wear
costumes that expose their midriffs, or that are low cut in the front.  Wearing a T-shirt or leotard underneath these types of costumes is acceptable.  Students in grades 1 - 6 may color their hair at home during the lunch hour, but may not come to school in the morning with make-up or colored hair.  Also, no hair colorings, sprays or supplies are to be brought to school.  At 3:20 p.m. all "walkers" will be reminded to go straight home.
Please help to make this a fun and safe day for all of our children!

Coat Drive
Coat Closet is Open!

The cold weather is right around the corner and soon we will have many children in our community without proper outerwear.  Due to your generosity over the years, the Coat Closet is fully stocked with the exception of boys and girls sizes 8 through 14.  If you have any outerwear in these sizes that you would like to donate, please put them in the box located by the front entrance of Whiteley marked "Coat Closet".  If you are donating several items, we would appreciate if you would put them in a trash bag to help with transport.  The Coat Closet accepts outerwear only - including coats, gloves or mittens, hats, snow pants, scarves and boots.  The sizes range from toddler to adult.  Also, the coat closet is in need of extra hangers.  If you have any extra hangers, please send them with your donation.  All items will be greatly appreciated.

If you are a family in need of outerwear from the Coat Closet this winter season, please contact our school nurse or our social worker.

Our First School Assembly Was a Success

Close Encounters of the Chemical Kind

The students at Whiteley were treated to a wonderful assembly on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Mr. Bill Bosworth, with "The Science Alliance", brought his awesome chemical experiments and reactions to school. Many students were chosen from the audience to participate. Mr. Bosworth, a former high school Chemistry teacher, is eager to get kids excited about science in the hope that they become interested in taking Chemistry in high school, possibly opening the door for future interest in a career in the science fields. Some of the recipes for the experiments that he made with the students can be found on his website, www.thesciencealliance.com

Birthday Book Club Committee

Are you looking for a special way to celebrate your child's birthday at school? Joining the Birthday Book Club is a great way to do this while increasing our library collection at the same time. Celebrate your child's birthday by donating a book to the Frank C. Whiteley Resource Center. Your child's name will be on a permanent label inside the book and they will be the first to check it out.

Your child should receive their birthday greeting and information about joining the club the week of their birthday. If interested, send your donation ($10 - $15 for an entire book) and the form to school in an envelope marked Birthday Book Club. We will then invite your child to the RC to select a book from "the vault". Students who had a birthday over the summer received a card a couple weeks ago.

Monday, November 14:  Three rooms will be set aside to help parents who have children transitioning to Junior High in District 15, Palatine High School or Rolling Meadows High School.
