Notes from the District 15 School Board
Meeting
August 13th, 2008Spotlight on the Board
is a synopsis of notes and recordings taken at the District 15
School Board meetings by Frank C. Whiteley PTA’s school board liaison,
Jennifer
Mondy. They are meant to help parents and staff who
are unable to attend the Board meetings on a regular basis to keep
informed about the issues and plans affecting the district. These notes
are not endorsed by District 15 or the Board of Education.
Transportation Update – Opening of School
Under the leadership of a new transportation director, the district
is prepared to run 145 bus routes within the guidelines established by
the Board. Initial route issues have been problem solved and the
department is confident that any existing situations will be resolved
before the start of school. Major road construction is taking place
near Plum Grove Junior High causing the closure of Old Plum Grove Road
until mid-January. Arrangements have been made to allow bus access in
the afternoon in order to expedite the dismissal process and avoid
delays at the second tier schools.
Board Policy 7:100 –
Students: Health, Eye and Dental Examinations & Exclusion of Students
A new State law requires eye exams for children entering school for
the first time. However districts may not exclude children from
attending school if either the vision or dental exams have not been
completed.
New Business - Town Hall Meetings
The Board discussed a member’s proposal to hold a series of
structured, topic specific meetings with the public regarding the future
of education in the district. A suggestion was made to wait until data
from the Facilities Study can be reviewed by both the Board and the
public. Further discussion and possible action will take place at the
September Board meeting.
The next scheduled Regular Board of Education meeting is Wednesday,
September 10th, 2008
7 p.m. at Sundling Junior High in Palatine.
